Music
SLC has a great
range of large music venues as well as smaller ones that means you can catch a
show most days of the week! Urban Lounge is on the go 7 days a week, with
tickets to some concerts starting at $10. The State Room is a wonderful
intimate venue, that attracts some great acts. The Depot is a bit bigger but
also a fantastic venue. The Red Butte Garden Concert series is a wonderful way
to spend your hot summer evenings, sitting on the grass with a picnic listening
to wonderful shows, but tickets sell incredibly fast! Finally, the Vivant Arena
is the big concert venue that gets all the big tours.
Bars/restaurant
Downtown SLC has
a bunch of wonderful restaurants and bars, lots of them double up. Some
favorites include Copper Onion, White Horse, Lake Effect (that also has live
music!), Takashi, Current Fish and Oysters and more. Gracie’s is great for some
late-night dancing and The Red Door and Bar-X have delicious cocktails.
The abundance of National parks, State parks, ski resorts, and trails make SLC the place to be if you like the outdoors. Moab, the gateway to Utah's 5 (!) National parks, is only a 5h drive away as are all the other amazing state parks scattered accross Utah. If you only wish to go for a short trip, the Wasatch front and its canyons offer a wide variety of hikes that everyone can enjoy. If you ever get bored of what Utah has to offer, just head out to any neighbouring state and come back entirely refreshed. Below is only a small part of our favourite's list, but we wouldn't want to share too much yet, right?
Skiing
Are you a snow addict? Utah is said to have the best powder snow in the world and is accessbiel within a 30 min drive.

Trail/street running
There are plenty of opportunities to go for a run through the urban areas of SLC. If you ever run out of options and want to try something more adventurous you can head for the hills around SLC for some trail running. Beyond that there's plenty of opportunities to test your skills against other like-minded people in one of the many running competitions around.
Are you moving to Utah and are you looking for a neighbourhood to settle down? Our postdocs have quite the experience moving around in Salt Lake City and would definitely recommend these places.
Sugarhouse
Located next to SLC's largest park is the Sugarhouse area. It's quite a recent neighbourhood with plenty of stores, restaurants, and bars. You are close to the highway and new apparmentment buildings are rising like mushrooms. You have plenty of bus routes going to the U and downtown.
The avenues
The
Avenues is an eclectic mix of young families, and those who have lived there
for years. It is a (mostly) liberal hub, of friendly neighbors. Within the neighborhood
you have the delicious Avenues Proper, Wildwood (with a secret speakeasy
downstairs), Publik Coffee, Cucina and more. You are a 2 min drive from
numerous trailheads, connecting to the Bonneville shoreline trail, where you
can hike, mountain bike or trail-run to your hearts content. You are also a 5
min drive/Uber downtown for more restaurants, music venues and bars. Finally,
but importantly, you are a 7-10 min drive from the U. It is one of the more
expensive neighborhoods, but you can’t beat it for lifestyle.
